Taking Care of the Strays

Whether you are in-between hair removal treatments or haven’t started them yet, it’s normal for both men and women to have hair in areas they’d rather not!

While electrolysis and laser hair removal are the best choices for permanent hair removal, you may be wondering what’s if there’s anything wrong with a little shaving, waxing, tweezing, or threading.

Our expert hair removal practitioner, Dolores Holleman, advises that tweezing, waxing,  threading, and sugaring can cause more hair growth and in-grown hairs. For example: while probably seen as one of the easiest hair removal methods, tweezing in areas that are considered hormonal can actually cause hair to come in thicker and darker and can stimulate new hairs. (Areas that are considered hormonal can be upper lip, chin, neck, sides, areolas, belly, and even bikini line.)

But you don’t need to avoid tweezers altogether. It’s okay to tweeze your eyebrows or wax your legs as these are non-hormonal areas.

You may be surprised to find out that even though our mothers and grandmothers always told us never to shave, they were wrong!  Shaving actually has no effect on hair growth- it won’t make your hair grow back thicker, darker, or stimulate new hairs the way other methods can.

Shaving is similar to giving the hair on your head on trim. The roots of the hair remain untouched (unlike tweezing or waxing). The reason it appears thicker is that you are shaving your hairs at their thickest point – so they will continue to grow out from their thickest point, which may seem a bit jarring at first (unlike tweezing or waxing, where the hair will begin to regrow from the root). Additionally, growing hair in from the root takes much longer than just having the hair grow out from its trim! That is why you may perceive your hair to be growing back more quickly.

Again, electrolysis and laser are the best choices for permanent hair removal- but you will need multiple sessions to reach your goals. We recommend shaving any stray hairs that show up while you’re in-between sessions!
